West Bend (22-4-0) was hosted by Fond du Lac (16-7-3) on Saturday night at the Blue Line Ice Center for the final regular season matchup between the two teams. West Bend came into the game leading the season series 2 games to 1 but were defeated 3-2 by rival Fond du Lac, splitting the season series.
West Bend opened up the scoring ten minutes into the first period with Shay Klitzke’s 24 goal of the season, which was set up by Russell Johnson and R.J. Rick. West Bend did not have their normal lines together tonight as they were missing a few forwards. Dusty Jonasson and Shay Klitzke served as the two centers while five wingers rotated in. Bomber forward Steve Klug got into a shoving match with Fond du Lac enforcer Justin Cooke which resulted in double minor penalties and a misconduct for each player. Fond du Lac tied the game up a few moments off of a goal from Ryan Smet to make it a 1-1 game heading into the first intermission.
Just over a minute into the second period West Bend defenseman Tom Lindgren recieved a pass from Scott Holtz and threw a shot on which leaked in five-hole to give West Bend a 2-1 lead. With 3 minutes to go in the 2nd Ryan Durant buried his first goal of the night for Fond du Lac to tie the game up once again. With under a minute to go in the period, Justin Cooke began to slash Bomber forward Tanner Tryggestad. Tryggestad had made his presence known during this game laying seven hits. Tryggestad retaliated and the two of them were given minor coincidental penalties.
West Bend got off to a slow start in the third period allowing 8 shots in the first 10 minutes. Fond du Lac outshot West Bend 13-8 in the third period. Billy Sias was very strong all game but a turnover behind the net led to Ryan Durant’s second goal of the night which turned out to be the game winner. Cooke again was causing problems for West Bend as he dragged Scott Holtz into a fight which resulted with Cooke on the ground. Cooke ended the night with 30 minutes in penalties. The two of them were given misconducts and roughing penalties.
West Bend was outshot 43-36 in this game as Billy Sias made 40 of 43 saves and Fond du Lac goaltender Randy Willis made 34 saves in 36 shot attempts. West Bend will face Monroe on Friday night at 8:30 for their first game of the GLHL tournament at the Kettle Moraine Ice Center.
